Star Trek Communicator Badge
Claimed Object #15
The urgency for the moment is the object I would like for my father:
Star Trek Communicator Badge.
Puuulease. I would like to frame it and give to my Dad for his belated Hanukkah gift, which I will mail when I am stateside on this trip. I will also send him a photo copy of this story with the object, and I believe lend him the Future Perfect: how Star Trek conquered planet earth which you gave me with lovely inscription when we stopped in your flat after we had Asian (Thai? I seem to remember Spring Rolls) in your Neighborhood. That day I took the Bart from SF to meet you. Problem is I have never read this book of yours. (Aghast!) I am just not a science fiction kind of person. I have read deeply every of the title of yours and feathered with post-it’s with replies to at least Size of the Worle and Snake Lake. I love your writing and don’t know how I let Future Perfect fall so low in the to read box, just not my interest, I think, but what do I know, really? Since you do easily cross over subject matter and formats. Bueno, I can’t send the book to Dad unless I read it obviously, but it is beside me now and will be my reading material en route. So if it is fitting for my 82 year old school Trekkie Dad and if you agree to send the badge I will have a killer gift of meaning for my father. My Dad is a first generation Trekker, he has an oil portait painting of Spock, that my mother’s mother gave or painted for him, which he has hung in ever office he has ever worked in, and still hangs in his home office, where the 82 year old is still fighting the American dream fight to for the return he deserves. My dad always told me that he hung that in his office because he believes in biz you should be purely logical. My dad may be emotionally obtuse and stunted, but he is full scholarship Wharton grad who was brought up with his just his mother and worked his ass off. Now at 82, not sure if he will see monetary return on such hard work. He is smart as shit, not a genious like your brother. But a man who can retain information like the best or them, biz and numbers wiz, fantastic negotiator. Basically my exact opposite (cosmic joke or more souls that have lessons to learn from each other in the lifetime.) Next to the oil painter of Spock in his office, he framed a fax I sent him from my first job in SF, at a direct marketing firm south of market. I took the logo off the fax, made is just a simple for, from, date, re: fascmile where it was addressed to him by from Spock explaining that his exceptional mind had been noted and that they were sorry he had not been beamed up to the Star Ship Enterprise yet, yadda yadda. Something about the latest Swim Suit Edition. It was Short and direct and in Spock’s tone. Not all his daughter’s verbose style. It was signed something like — We’ll be back in touch, live long and prosper. The signature was just an angular s, a slasher “s”? alike you a backwards “z.” It hangs next to the portrait in his office. He didn’t know who it was from and it came out really believable or curious so he loves it. I eventually told him it was from me and he was surpri
I can promise you my Dad will never were the badge on a Star Fleet uniform at a Comicon, nor will you see him wearing it in any fashion at a Burning Man, but I can also say almost positively that you would never see my father wearing the badge on a fleece at Pete’s Coffee. But it will be cherished. It will be honored. It will be a hugely appreciated gift with meaning from his Daughter that will be framed to hang beside the other two items. My dad would be thrilled to have this commerative piece in his collection and will enjoy to know how it fits into the story in 108 which I will give him, along, I believe, with lending him Future Perfect. Once I read it. Of course just a lend since it is a 1st edition Greenwald with such a lovely inscription.
