Sandalwood Ganesh (India)

Claimed Object #8

I’m not done with the book yet—but so far, if I were to make a case for inheriting one of your objects, it would have to be the Ganesh sculpture, for several reasons:

  1. I think I gave you the lead for the India Tourism office that sponsored your trip with your mother
  2. Ganesh is the god of new beginnings and removing obstacles who is so beloved to writers– and as a writer you have helped awaken my own creativity in a very Ganesh-like fashion, including inspiring the letter that became the introduction to my first book
  3. When I first met you back in 1996, you gave me a little Ganesh figure to carry on my six-month journey around India. To my chagrin (and more importantly, to yours) it got broken while jiggling around in my backpack. Hmm, as I write this, this seems to be an argument for NOT giving me the Ganesh…but I assure you, I have matured greatly since then in my ability to care for my loved ones and their gifts and this would be an opportunity to demonstrate this!
  4. When I die, my son Skye will inherit it 🙂

But if someone else has a better or prior claim to it, no worries—truly, I don’t  need any more objects myself and I can feel your Ganesha presence in my life without it!
